Online UNCRC Article 12 training

6 MSYPs are taking part in a workshop gathered round a table with two of them writing down notes

Throughout The Right Way project MSYPs worked to develop a training session to deliver to Scottish Government and public sector officials. After delivering the training, MSYPs determined that it should form an important part of The Right Way web hub.

MSYPs adapted the training to create this online resource.

There are four sections to the training programme which can be done in  one session or over four separate sessions.

The time it takes depends on the time you put into the activities, but it will likely take around 1.5-2 hours to complete all four sessions. Click the links below to start the UNCRC Article 12 Training programme, starting with ‘What is the UNCRC and Article 12’.

For each section, watch the videos below and then click the link to download the info pack and activity sheet to complete the training.

A plain text version of the info pack is available here.

What is the UNCRC and Article 12?

Fundamental to decision-makers upholding the rights of young people is understanding those rights and why they exist. This session gives a brief overview of the UNCRC, its history, and then takes a specific look at Article 12.

What makes participation meaningful?

This session introduces the idea of meaningful participation – the method by which decision-makers can uphold young people’s UNCRC Article 12 Right – and the Lundy Model of Participation which explains the elements required to practice meaningful participation.

Barriers to participation for seldom-heard groups.

This session looks into the barriers to participation that are experienced by young people, particularly those young people from seldom-heard groups, that decision-makers should work to break down.

The importance of feedback.

The final session looks at feedback, which was identified throughout The Right Way project as a fundamental element to participation that is often missing. This section explains why participation matters and gives practical tips on delivering meaningful feedback.
